LAMPERIA BY LUKASZ STACHOWICZ

As promised here is the interview with Lukasz Stachowicz – the winner of Cracow Fashion Awards 2011. After the interview enjoy the photo gallery of “Lamperia” collection – his diploma collection that beside the main statue has received few additional prizes.

FASHIONER (F): During the Cracow Fashion Awards I have heard accusations that your collection is very “retail”. But it’s inspiration is telling a different thing – what exactly has inspired you?
Lukasz Stachowicz (L.S.): Some wise person once said that “fashion is an art that we are seeing everyday“. When I have started to think about my diploma collection I knew that I want to create something suitable for everyday use. Those comments shows that I managed to do that. Of course I do not want to create pieces for mass production. Person that will buy any piece from my collection will feel that from the one side it is a unique design and from the other it is a practical and usable cloth. It is very hard to create classic collection that at the same time has something unique in it. The inspiration was inside me and in my emotions. It was also in the form of all troubles in gathering funds needed for the collection, it was the every single day from the moment when I started to think how to express a piece of me in the collection. In my opinion every true artist is in some way an exhibitionist and thanks to that he is able to create genuine pieces.
F: I have to congratulate you – collection that is catching eye on the catwalk and is practical for everyday use – it is not an usual view. Were there any pulbacks and starting over during the creation process?
L.S.: At the beginning I had many ideas and was unsure which way I want to go. In the end I thought that I simply have to create something personal. From that point (April 2010) overall conception has not changed. I started to make drawing on paper scraps, in notebooks, on cafe handkerchiefs. In September 2010 I was ready to put it all together and design in detail all outfits. I have to admit that I was very afraid of that moment.
F: How looked your everyday work on the collection?
L.S.: Since May 2010 I thought about the collection everyday. I have searched for inspirations by memorizing my trips, by listening to my favorite music. In September 2010 when whole collection has been transfered onto paper boards I started to look for proper fabrics and to work with a tailor.
F: What emotions have you been experiencing during the diploma show itself?
L.S.: Everything what happened on the stage I remember as through a fog… Only from my friends I have heard that I had been awarded nine times! During the first few days after the show when I looking at the table just to check is the main prize is really mine. I was (and still I am!) very proud and happy. I was especially happy as something that for 2,5 years was pure abstraction to my parents now ended which such success. It is a grand prize for me, I feel as I have won on many levels.
F: Does Cracow Fashion Award has already opened any doors for you? Do you have any professional plans after  the graduation?
L.S.: After receiving all those prize I am surely feel more confident in creating as the collection has been picked up by many people involved in the fashion for years. The main prize is also a warning that now I will have to work harded to created better designs. Has it opened any doors? I think that at least the small ones – I have already started to think about my new collection. Hopefully I will not fail.
F: The Lamperia collection was mainly for men. What do you think about the general style of Polish men? Personally I am seeing negligence and ignorance of fashion. Will you try to change anything with that?
L.S.: I will try but not to force any change. I will try by proposing something bolder that is a divergence from conservative form. What I have in mind is an outfit that communicates mentality of man wearing it. Polish men style is often conservative and purely accidental. It can be connected with the lack of awareness that your outfit is the first message sent to another person.
F: What are you memories of 2,5 years in SAPU (Cracow School of Art & Fashion Design)? Would you recommend this school to others?
L.S.: Years in SAPU was a wonderful period of my life that will not come back. I came to this school after the Secondary School with hardly any practical knowledge. But the hard work gave wonderful results. I can recommend SAPU to everyone who things that he/she has some potential. 2,5 yeras is enough to form end expand your sensitivity and style. When the teachers will see that you care they will guide you and support. SAPU is a great chance for people that for various reasons were unable to attend at Academy of Fine Arts.
F: Thank you for your time.
Enjoy the photo gallery with diploma session of the Lamperia collection.

SPRING/SUMMER 2011 COLOUR TRENDS PT.4 – KHAKI

SPRING/SUMMER 2011 COLOUR TRENDS PT.4 – KHAKI

It is time for another part of my series about colour trends for men in spring/summer 2011. Today I will write about khaki which is strongly bonded with military and which can be seen in many current collections.

This colour trend is a continuation of autumn/winter trend described by me last year. Of course for the spring/summer season the shades of used green are lighter and more vivid. When looking at Burberry or Bottega Veneta autumn/winter 2010 and current spring/summer collections we can see a smooth continuation of the trend.
As in case of earlier described spring colour trends (white, blue, beige) also in case of khaki stylists are mostly propose us outfits based on one colour.
For me khaki is a very difficult colour when talking about creating interesting outfits and mixing khaki pieces with other colours. In my closed I have only two khaki pieces (shorts and safari shirt) that aren’t used to often.

SUNDAY BEST

SUNDAY BEST

Whilst Easter Sunday is fast approaching, I know you’ve all been endlessly ransacking your closets to put together a decent outfit. Just like any formal occasion you don’t want to be too overdressed, but you also don’t want to be under-dressed. You want casual and classic, whilst remaining sophisticated and edgy.

The White Suit: (Gareth Pugh blazer, $1,875 thecorner.com)
This is essential in having a fashionable spring season.White on white is a trend that’s meant to lift our spirits and get us out of those depressing black ensembles we’ve been sporting for the past couple seasons. White symbolizes optimism and a return to simpler times.
The Slim Pant: (Burberry Prorsum Cotton Trousers,$650 mrporter.com)
Women may be celebrating their curves this season , but men are slimming down. This year Euro slim is in, and proper tailoring is essential.
The Oversized Shirt: (T by Alexander Wang High Waist Pullover Tee, $130 barneys.com)
Just because you’re dressing up doesn’t mean you have to part with all the remnants of that 80’s rocker chic. It’s still ok to wear oversized tee’s, leather jackets and leather pants. Just remember like all good things, everything in moderation.
The Aviators:(Balmain Metal Framed Aviator Sunglasses, $635 mrporter.com)
Every man should own a pair. Not only are they aesthetically pleasing but they’re incredibly versatile.
Brogues: (Church’s Bi-Colour Leather Downtown Brogues, $480 mrporter.com)
For the man that truly wants to look like a gentleman, get rid of his combat boots and return to elegance, a brogue is the perfect shoe for you. They look just like the common man’s dress shoe except for their beautiful oxford wing tips.

SPRING-SUMMER 2011 COLOUR TRENDS PT. 5: GREY

Fashion Bank

In the last part of my series about colour trends I wrote about khaki which was an continuation of one autumn/winter 2010 colour trend. Today I will say a few words about another colour that was very popular in autumn/winter 2010 and is visible in many collections for spring/summer 2011: grey.

When comparing current spring/summer grey to the one from the last autumn/winter season used shades of grey are practically the same: from dove grey with sky blue through classic grey to steel grey. The fabrics is what made the difference – instead of warm fabrics now can see light cottons and linen.
For few seasons grey are becoming a very important colour in men collections. In my opinion it is a great option to build a foundation of your wardrobe. By that I mean clothes that will be timeless and can be easily mixed with a variety of colours. My personal favourites to mix with grey this season are: white, sky blue, light pink, light violet and yellow. In case of grey the possibilities are practically endless.

THE ART OF THE TRENCH

  Fashion BAnk

They say, “April showers, bring May flowers”, that’s nice but are we supposed to do in the meantime? As I type idly at my computer  eyes shifting from screen to window and I watch the rain once violent, now softly tap on my window, I begin to wonder, how does one survive a rain storm in style, without sacrificing all sense of practicality?

Is this possible? In times like these, with no other options, are we forced to lug out that dated nylon blazer mom gave us years ago, in order to brave the rain, and must we be forced to pull out those hideous rain boots as well? The answer is simple. No. Below are some of the most fashionable options for anyone caught in a similar fashion predicament:
CLASSIC:
(Burberry Prorsum Double Breasted Bonded Cotton Poplin Trenchcoat $2,395, us.burberry.com)
The Burberry trench coat is a classic staple in any spring wardrobe. For God’s sake Burberry practically invented the trench!
MODERN:
( Ann Demeulemeester Rain Jacket $1,485, antonioli.eu)
For those who prefer the less conventional route, this Demeulemeester may just do the trick. Eye- catching and unique trenches like these are quickly gaining prestige.
VINTAGE:
(Vivienne Westwood Trench Coat $666, farfetch.com)
Some prefer the back to basics aesthetic. Simple, slim and well fitted. Remiscinest of a time when the only mysteries in life were the ones on television, once a week. An era, pre- Law & Order and more Sherlock Holmes.

EDVARD MESS

EDVARD MESS

Edvard Mess (MichaÅ‚ Edward Szlasa) is a new figure in the Polish fashion. This year, graduated from the International School of Fashion Design and Costume in Warsaw, a collection of “Grenouille” is his debut. I had an opportunity to make a short interview with Edvard.
Fashioner: What inspired you in your first collection?
Edvard Mess: “Grenouille” collection is inspired by gore films, body modifications, BDSM and Marilyn Manson and Lady Gaga music videos. Based on deformations and performative figure depicts the phenomenon of the blurring of gender. Hence the man is carrying in his belly a baby.
Red elements of the collection are a kind of anti jewellery simulating drip blood, pus swollen blisters or are projecting pieces of the human guts. Collection is intended to show that fashion can go beyond its framework and become a kind of artistic spectacle.
Fashioner: Your collection is very avant-garde.  Are you thinking about the future of design in a similar fashion, or it will be more universal design?
Edvard Mess: It seems to me that I will be forced to compromise. Taking the fashion avant-garde is a great pleasure for me but I planned that in the future fashion will be the main source of my income.
Then I will focus on collections typically sensible by creating them in their own style. Deceive myself that it is possible – time will tell.
Fashioner: Your collection is addressed to men. Do you plan also projects for women?
Edvard Mess: Of course, I’m not going to be limited. During the time I will see in what kind of designs I feel better and then undertake a final decision.
Fashioner: What kind of person can wear Edvard Mess designs?
Edvard Mess: First of all, for someone who understands my approach to fashion.  Additionally, must have a lot of courage in our country being a maverick is still met with mindless criticism.
Fashioner: What are your future plans?
Edvard Mess: I recently graduated from the International School of Fashion Design and Costume. Now I have a lot of free time during which I would like to work as a stylist. In my opinion the occupation should give the pleasure.
Fashioner: Who inspires Edvard Mess?
Edvard Mess: First of all, life and personal experiences. But mainly cinema, music and photography (in the first place Erwin Olaf and Steven Klein). And as for the designer is Jeremy Scott, Martin Margiela, Rei Kawakubo, and, of course, Gareth Pugh.
Fashioner: Where can we buy your designs?
Edvard Mess: Nowhere at this moment. These are single pieces. I have already lend a few items from my collection, which is great. I would like to promote the collection first, then take up sewing or selling something on the order.
Thank you for the conversation!

MEN SPRING-SUMMER 2011 TRENDS PT.1

MEN SPRING-SUMMER 2011 TRENDS PT.1

After taking a look at the colour trends it is time to write about forms, styles and details in men fashion for this spring-summer 2011 season.
1. wide trousers
For few years most designers were favouring slimmer and slimmer trousers. It applied to casual and more formal trousers. Slim trend expanded beyond the trousers and I think that it will continue but from time to time we will see some anti-slim variations. Example of such variation can be seen in men trousers for this season. Many designers in spring-summer collections have proposed extra wide trousers mixed with slim tops.

2. high trousers
Another interesting variation in this season are high trousers. I have mentioned the slimming trend. Often it was followed with lowering the trousers to the hips. Hipsters became some sort of standard in casual fashion – especially in jeans but not only. We can also see more and more suits with super slim form and hipster trousers.
Many designers have proposed higher more traditional trousers for this season. Will this became a new trend? Personally I think that it has bigger chance than wide trousers.
From the left: Calvin Klein, Ermenegildo Zegna, Marc by Marc Jacobs
3. beige chinos
Beige is one of the top colours for this season seen in many collections. I have a feeling that beige cotton chinos will become a hit. I was able to spot them in several collections during fashion weeks and it seems that many large mass brands have picked up and included such trousers in their chain stores (H&M, Reserved, Zara, Cottonfield, Massimo Dutti…). I think that beige chinos have a chance to replace blue jeans as men casual trousers No 1.
From the left: Canali, Corneliani, Dsquared2
4. Double-breasted tops
Double-breasted tops (jackets, coats) were very important in autumn-winter 2011 and we can see a follow up of this trend. On fashion weeks it was easy to spot double-breasted jackets, sweaters and coats.
From the left: Canali, Corneliani, Dries van Noten
Soon I will publish second part of this article in which I will write few words about shorts.

MEN TRENDS FOR SPRING/SUMMER 2011 PT.2/2

MEN TRENDS FOR SPRING/SUMMER 2011 PT.2/

It is time for the last part of my short subjective series about characteristic trends in men fashion for the spring-summer 2011 season. Today I will focus only on shorts which are a typical summer piece.

During this seasons two shorts models will be very visible:
First one are very “short shorts” similar to tennis shorts from ‘70. I was able to spot them in many collections. Fortunately they are made from classic cotton or linen fabrics – not some synthetic sport fabrics. Thanks to that  they are more like the old ‘70 sport shorts.
Second characteristic shorts for this season are those with legs rolled up – during production or by the user. Last year  it was neat to roll up long trousers and for this season many brands presented rolled up shorts. I personally do not like this idea but I started to like shorts with… cuffs. Lately I have bought in second-hand some beige Polo Ralph Lauren chinos with a stain on a knee. They are perfect to cut them and convert to shorts with cuffs.

IT’S GETTING WORSE

                              ITS Getting Worse

Until recently I thought I was too young to claim that “when I was young” everything was better. Now I tend to change my mind.
The press photo is tumbling down for ages, with uniformly accelerated motion lower and lower, and the vast rise numbers of poor photographers is inversely proportional to the prices of cameras. There is nothing strange within it. I have nothing against blocking up facebook and blogging servers with poor photography, I can even get over that social community cannot distinguish a good photography from a ridiculously weak one, rescued with a few moves of curves in photoshop and slight of theoretically desaturation “to create a climate”. But lack of criticism from a photograph and there internet publishers is starting getting me nervous twitches.
Once upon a time in the distant galaxy, that is 3 years ago after a catwalk show in Warsaw, we got 15 photos. But these were pictures which we could put into our portfolio, if necessary we printed them, long enough they were used as lookbook which we didn’t have time to make. After last fashionweek , every fashion portal published their own photos, half of which looked, as if were made by hand on time 1 / 20 at iso 1200. Or, as if were done by mobile phone, which even with 13 megapixel matrix will be committing the ritual murder on notions of the color depth and the white balance . The least of worries, when somebody’s goal is doing photos with climate, and they do not have to be clear. But if somebody try to make fashion documentation this way, then that person should change his profession before getting killed by accumulated curses of angry contractors.
I know, photographing fashion shows is a hard work. It’s dark, the models are in motion. In Poland usually there is no place to set a tripod, crowds, everyone wants their own shots . The flash-lamps which could light a model from a distance of 3 meters are not only only beyond the budget, but also dreams of any “internet photographer”. Even if they had an equipment which they cannot afford, still it wouldn’t be easy to do. For the example, photographer Marco Madeira wouldn’t undergo preliminary quality selection on secondary stock in the Internet because of the grain. OK, I understand that. But that’s why a profession of the photographer exists , that’s why some people even try to earn money on it – because it requires investments and talent.
I lose temper when I have to sort 200 to 300 photos on different portals ( to own a portal you don’t need to be a webmaster any longer, the reader has a lot of time, and the pages can scroll over 15 sec and get frozen every 40 sec). and still I don’t know how the collection looks like, because I see only multi-colored smears (because of processes of desaturation and of balancing with curves – poor method of hiding the white balance set to the auto mode – these colors don’t get even close to reality).
I myself often do photos at shows, my effectiveness is 1 correct (do not mistake with “good”) photograph on to 3. But I am keeping them on my own blog and on my own facebook I am not assailing innocent people with them. I am having a feeling, that many “professional” photographers would need at least a half of my capacity for self-criticism. So please, people, let the professionals do their profession.

Pink for MEN

Pink in men fashion is – at least in Poland – controversial. Common opinion is that pink is “not for men”, “effeminate” and is used to manifest a different sexual orientation. But the truth is that pink is an established colour in men fashion in men fashion since ‘70 – ‘80 (even in some conservative countries).

Today pink colour is commonly used in a lot of men collections and it is hardly controversial in Weastern Europe.  I will even dare to say that pink is being more appreciated in formal wear than in casual. Pink formal shirts are as popular as traditional blue ones. We can find pink formal propositions in collections of such conservative brands as: Charles Tyrwhitt, Thomas Pink, TM Lewin.
Unfortunately mental barriers in Pole heads are so strong that in my opinion pink formal wear will not become so popular as in Great Britain for example. I can think only about two examples of Polish politics wearing pink – Janusz Palikot and former president Aleksander Kwasniewski. Unfortunately the second one has switched to blue shirts.
Pink can be without doubts a very original & male colour at the same time. In Poland strong character is the key – only self confident men should wear it.
Bellow I have shown what pink elements can be safely added to your wardrobe: classic shirts, linen shirts, ties with pink applications, polo shirts, socks, sweaters. More risky are: trousers, shorts, jackets, shoes and underwear. Personally I would recommend to include only one pink element in your outfit. Mixing pink with pink is not an easy task.
