Being a student you'll need a bag roomy enough to hold your laptop and some notes, but you would not want the bag to be too big. The key to getting the right bag is patience, take time to search/window shop or peruse online. You should get bags with enough utility pockets, so you could stash away little stuff like key chains, blackberry or even your wallet. It makes access to these things faster and easier. Finally invest in a good pair of brogues, you can find moderately priced ones at Asos or Topman.
